Chesney White took the direct kick for Franklin, scoring the lone goal of the close battle.
Last night, the Centennial Lady Cougars hosted the Franklin Lady Rebels in a match between Franklin’s high scoring offense and Centennial’s stingy defense, that resulted in a close score of FHS 1, CHS 0.
The Lady Rebels entered the game with its scoring record of 88 goals thus far in the 2011 season. Centennial went into the game with its own impressive stat as the number one defense in the state for fewest points allowed, giving up only 3 goals going into its game against Franklin. The Lady Cougars continued their strong defensive play against the number one team in the district and held the Lady Rebels to only one goal on the night.
Franklin’s single goal was scored by senior forward, Chesney White, from a direct kick outside of the Lady Cougar’s box in the first half of play. White and Centennial’s senior goalkeeper, Kelsey Brouwer who are club teammates, went face to face, and White placed the kick just outside of Brouwer’s reach for the 1 - 0 lead.
After a first half of both teams having only one shot on goal each, the second half opened up with more shots on goal for both the Lady Cougars and the Lady Rebels. Although more shots on goal were recorded, neither goalkeeper allowed one to get by. In the second half, Franklin’s goalkeeper, Emily Burchfield made three saves, and Centennial’s Kelsey Brouwer, made four saves of her own.
“I hope no one thinks we were overlooking Centennial,” said Franklin’s head coach, Jimmy Burchett. “We took this game very seriously. We knew they had a good defense and a great goalkeeper. They have been tough defensively all year. Special teams find ways to win games like this, which I think our team did last night.”
The Lady Rebels came away from last night’s district game adding another win to their remarkable record of now 15 wins and 0 losses. The Centennial Cougars also came away with a very notable defensive show, being the only team to hold the Lady Rebels to only one goal.
Franklin will play another district game on October 11th against the Independence Lady Eagles. Centennial will host Hillsboro High School on October 11th as well for their Senior Night.
